HAT - The Senator: A Tribute to Tommy Banks

The multiple-award-winning Hutchinson Andrew Trio (HAT) is a vital and distinctively western force on the Canadian and international jazz scene. Winners of the prestigious TD Grand Jazz Award at the 34th Annual Montreal International Jazz Festival and a four-time Western Canadian Music Awards nominee, HAT brings a unique perspective to their music inspired by the vast prairie landscapes and majestic Rocky Mountains that surround them. Downbeat Magazine made the group an Editor’s Pick and called them “a terrific listen, with great musicianship throughout.”

Pianist Chris Andrew is a National Jazz Awards Rising Star Award Winner and singular voice on piano and compositions in Canada. His music rewards the listener creating shifting textures, melodies, rhythm and tonality that reveal themselves constantly.

Chris has brought all his talents to bear on the trio’s upcoming release The Senator: A Tribute To Tommy Banks. An homage to his mentor and inspiration, the Honourable Tommy Banks (OC AOE FRCMT).

Recorded live at Canada’s longest running jazz club The Yardbird Suite in Edmonton, AB, the music features a different side of the HAT. They step away from the contemporary back to their roots in traditional jazz alongside Canadian jazz masters PJ Perry (sax), Al Muirhead (trumpet) and rising star Mallory Chipman (vocals).

The trio looks forward to sharing this heartfelt and swinging album to audiences, and sharing the legacy of the late, great Tommy Banks thanks to the support of the CKUA Radio Foundation, Alberta Foundation for the Arts and Alberta Music.

Amazing Show at JazzAhead!

Yesterday evening we had the chance to play the Canadian Blast showcase at JazzAhead in front of a packed house in Bremen, Germany!

The band traveled long and far to get there, but it was absolutely worth it! Chris flew in from Edmonton, Kodi from Calgary and Karl from Los Angeles. A lot of travel to play 1 hour and 12 minutes of music.

This was our first trip to Germany with the band, and our first time using a string quartet other than the Lily's from Canada. We showcased with a fantastic string quartet from the Bremen symphony called Quartetto Con Brio. Led by Steffen Drabek (viola) the group proved how strong the classical scene in Germany is. With only one rehearsal and a soundcheck, we walked onstage and played an amazing set for VIPs from JazzAhead and jazz fans from Bremen! Steffen helped warm the crowd up by speaking German before performing a beautiful version of Grey Dawn with Chris.

Some great company to be in for the Canadian Blast: Emi R. Roussel Trio, Matt HErskowitz & the Kirk MacDonald Quartet. Chris wrapped the evening up playing piano for Kirk MacDonald, impressing not only the Europeans, but the Canadians as well.

So great to see so many of our musical friends and colleagues from Canada including Myriad 3, Laila Biali, Peter Cardinelli (Alma Records), Jim West (Justin Time), Emie R Rousell Trio, Matt Herskowitz, Kirk MacDonald, Heidi Fleming (FamGroup), Parc X Trio, George Koller, Ben Whitman....the list just goes on....

This trip proved to us that our new album Hollow Trees with strings is meant to be toured in Europe. Stay tuned as we set up dates in 2017 for a European tour!

Thanks again to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Alberta Music & Harvard Broadcasting and CIMA for helping make this trip a possibility.

Great CD Release in Medicine Hat

Thanks again to everyone who came out to Ye Olde Jar Bar last night in Medicine Hat. So happy to come play a sold out show at one of our favourite venues in Canada!

Always enjoy the hospitality shown by Piet & Ina Visser who run the venue and thanks to Dr. Bill & Margaret Taylor as well as Lyle Rebbeck from the Medicine Hat Jazz Festival Society for making the show a possibility with so many musicians.

It was fun having our full string quartet onstage with Andrea back in Canada from Los Angeles. Unfortunately our drummer Karl was unavailable, but kudos to Jon May for filling in admirably. We all had a great time!

The Senator pays tribute to the the Honourable Tommy Banks (1936-2018), a jazz legend who was both a world-class musician and a champion of the performing arts in his community. Banks – a pianist, conductor, arranger, composer, TV personality, actor, producer and politician – had an unparalleled, multi-faceted career spanning more than 60 years in virtually every aspect of the entertainment industry in Canada. A professional jazz pianist at age 14, he went on to lead his own bands, conduct symphony orchestras around the world, direct musical ceremonies at international events, host his own long-running television show, and act in film and television. He also served nearly 12 years in the Canadian Senate.

Recorded live at the Yardbird Suite and supported by the CKUA radio foundation, this album is a tribute to Banks’s legacy as an artist, but also to the important marks The Senator left on Alberta and Canada as a community leader, politician, and champion of the performing arts.

YAMAHA Drum Artist Karl Schwonik grew up on a farm near Gwynne, Alberta, Canada. Early on, he was exposed to a wide range of musical situations ranging from jazz to polka. Fresh out of high school, Schwonik embarked on a tour with 2-time Canadian Country Music Award Nominee Heather-Dawn. This was followed by an invitation to study at the Banff Centre where Schwonik was the youngest participant ever in the long-term career residency program.

Schwonik has an extremely active schedule; he has completed over thirty substantial tours as a leader. In his travels, Schwonik has performed in country barns, world-class jazz clubs and concert halls such as Carnegie Hall and the John F. Kennedy Center. His third of four recordings on Chronograph Records, 1+4, was #1 on Canadian jazz radio charts for nearly 2 months. Both 1+4 and Schwonik’s first album, Visions From the Farm, were nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award for ‘Jazz Recording of the Year’.

In 2008, Schwonik founded the Wetaskiwin Jazz Society in Wetaskiwin, AB. The WJS strives to build awareness for the arts in the central Alberta region with its three main programs: the Wetaskiwin Jazz Camp, Jazz-in-Schools and community concerts. In 2011, Schwonik joined the Board of Directors for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA). The AFA is a government agency responsible for disbursing nearly $30M annually in grants and scholarships to artists and arts organizations in Alberta.

In demand internationally as both a guest artist and instructor, Schwonik has taught students of all ages at over two hundred educational institutions. He regularly lectures on a broad range of topics in jazz, music business and artists coping with disabilities. Ye Olde Jar Bar, 8 Natalie St , Medicine Hat, AB

Hutchinson Andrew Trio CD Release Feat. Lily String Quartet

Join the award winning Hutchinson Andrew Trio (HAT) for the release of their new album ‘Hollow Trees’ featuring the Lily String Quartet.

The multiple-award-winning Hutchinson Andrew Trio is a vital and distinctively western force on the Canadian and international jazz scene. The group’s third album, 2013’s Prairie Modern, was featured in jazz bible Down Beat magazine, which called the album “a terrific listen, with great musicianship throughout.” The current fourth album, Hollow Trees, was written specifically for the seven-piece configuration of the HAT and the Lily String Quartet. Its music features powerful, moving compositions by HAT pianist Chris Andrew that combine the beauty of classical chamber music with the drive and interplay of jazz.

It’s music that rewards the committed listener. Shifting textures, melodies, rhythm and tonality reveal themselves constantly throughout each track, telling a story that is best experienced from beginning to end.

The trio’s many honours include Western Canadian Music Awards nominations for each of its previous three albums, and the prestigious TD Grand Jazz Award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Hollow Trees is the group’s most inspired work to date, and is poised to make an impact on the global jazz scene.
